Closet ShelvingCloset shelving is the smartest way to use the maximum amount of storage space in a closet.  Many closets simply have one long shelf over the clothes pole and though that does provide for extra storage, by redesigning the interior of your closet with shelving, you can increase the storage area dramatically. Closest shelving also makes it easier to organize and retrieve items from the closet.

Closet shelving can be purchased as free standing units or as metal shelving that you cut to customize a layout to your likings.  Many of the twelve inch and smaller metal shelving units and some smaller wood shelving units fit into a closet without the need to measure or customize in any manner.  However, to really get the maximum storage space out of a closet, it’s best if you can draw a rough draft of what type of storage you need and what you would like to achieve.

For example, the same amount of clothes spanning the full length of a closet can generally fit into half the closet space by using two clothes bars spanning half the closet length with one pole on top of the other. This will immediately open one half of the closet for storage.  You can then either stick a free standing shelving unit into the closet or use wire closet shelving. You can also combine things such as putting a tall thin wood shelving unit in the middle and wire shelving to one side with clothes poles on the other.

Another type of closet shelving that is quick and easy to set up is the numerous styles of canvas shelving.  There are hanging canvas shelves for holding shoes, sweaters, or other items.

Some of the most popular closet shelving systems and closet organizers on the market with solid reputations to back their products are; John Louis Home, Rubbermaid, Schulte and Honey-Can-Do withfree shipping from Amazon.com.

By using closet shelving you can greatly increase the amount of usable storage space in a closet.  Most importantly, closet shelving will allow you to get more organized so that finding things and putting them away will be easier and faster.

DIY Closet Shelving

Installing closet shelves is easier than you think.  This can be a popular do-it-yourself project because it’s relatively inexpensive and it’s a welcome update to an unorganized closet.

First, take out all the existing shelving.  It’s time to start fresh.  Plug any holes in the walls and prep for painting. I recommend a light colored paint to keep your closet will lite.  Be sure to install wood supports for the new closet shelves.  You don’t want to anchor your new shelves straingt into the drywall.  This will not provide the proper support to handle a heavy load.   You will want to beef up the front of the shelves so they don’t sag.

I have covered the simple points of this DIY project go here for more information of building your own closet shelving.
